Who to See @ Treasure Island Music Fest 2011 Part Deux

Earlier this week, a few members of the eventseekr team profiled eight bands playing this weekend’s Treasure Island Music Festival. Since then, we figured why not single out another six bands from the bill, and tell you, the festival-going public, why you should be going see these six as well. Here’s Joey P., Lauren E., Katie K., and Gillian H. with their picks.

Performing Saturday, October 15

YACHT TUNNEL STAGE: 2:15 to 2:55pm (Joey P.)

In 2009, I got to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs play the Fox Theatre, and the opening act was a little band named Yacht, but the heck if I knew who they were at the time. Before Yacht took the stage that night, all I saw were a couple signs on stage with a Triangle logo, a synthesizer and/or keyboard, a projector and a screen; these were their instruments. Before long, Yacht’s Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans appeared on stage sharply dressed in a suit and evening dress respectively. Not exactly sure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised with Yacht’s dance moves and stage presence. I didn’t know it yet, but their track “Psychic City” would later become one of my favorite discoveries from 2009. Since then, Bechtolt and Evans have assembled a whole live band when out on tour, so when you catch them this weekend at Treasure Island, expect to see Rob “Bobby Birdman” Kieswetter on the bass and keys, Jeffrey Brodsky on drums, and Katy Davidson on guitar. Very wicked dance parties in the crowd are sure to ensue.

Workin for the Weekend – eventseekr’s Top Picks for 10/14/11-10/16/11

It’s Wednesday again, which means that eventseekr’s got your weekend plan right here. In addition to  TIMF, Richard Serra at the SFMOMA and the SF Vintners Market, there’s a lot of good stuff lined up, and some of it for an awesome cause. Katie K. and Lucia C. teamed up to bring you this week’s edition of Workin for the Weekend.

Treasure Island Music Fest Night Shows (October 14-16): Everyone is talking about Treasure Island Music Festival, and for a good reason; it’s one of the most popular Bay Area events this weekend. However, if you’re not the festival type or you don’t feel like dedicating your entire Saturday and Sunday to pushing through crowds of ecstatic fans, you can still be a part of the action and get your live music fix at one of the TIMF night shows. The Head and The Heart show and The Drums show (which I am excited to be covering!) are already sold out, but tickets for the other night shows are still available. On Saturday, JFK (of MSTRKRFT and Death From Above 1979) will be playing a TIMF after party DJ set at Mezzanine in San Francisco. MSTRKRFT was at TIMF in 2009, and this year Death From Above 1979 is featured on Saturday’s lineup. For music lovers who favor a more laid-back vibe, Thao with The Get Down Stay Down will play at The Independent in San Francisco on Sunday. All of the TIMF night shows are restricted to ages 21 and over.  –Katie

Who to See @ Treasure Island Music Fest 2011 – eventseekr’s Top 8

As the whole Bay is probably aware, Treasure Island Music Fest 2011 is this weekend, and just like everyone else, we’re beyond excited for this year’s kickass lineup. In celebration of that, we had Julia G., Gillian H., Alexa D., Lauren E. and Katie K. pick out the bands they want to see the most. Even though all of the sets are staggered between the Bridge and Tunnel Stages, we still want to make sure you know to get your ass back on the field for the following performances. So hold your pee, pack some energy bars, and leave the ferris wheel in the Treasure Chest for later–these are the artists you need to see. ALOE BLACC TUNNEL STAGE: 12:45 to 1:25pm (Julia G.)

Somehow I associate all those vintage soul revivals with music that people go to for comfort. The soul music created by Aloe Blacc (of “I Need a Dollar” fame) is comfortable and ultra-tasteful without getting too gentrified and therefore annoying. It has groove as well as dignity. Aloe Blacc is also known for his soulful cover versions of unexpected songs (by Velvet Underground and Green Day), so you probably should expect that at the fest.
