POPPED! Music Festival and Philadelphia

Be sure to check out this week’s POPPED! Music Festival in Philadelphia. Taking place on Friday September 23rd and Saturday the 24th in FDR Park, this festival will surely cure your depression over the end of the summer festival season. POPPED! will feature an extensive lineup of big time performers such as The Shins, Pretty Lights and Girl Talk. The festival has made a comeback this year to the excitement of Philadelphians and out-of-towners alike, and FDR Park is the perfect place for it. Located in South Philadelphia, this green oasis nestled within the city is comprised of grassy fields and lakes. There’s no better way to enjoy Philadelphia in the fall than listening to some awesome music in FDR Park.

While POPPED! will no doubt provide plenty of entertainment, the City of Brotherly Love has much more to offer. Whether you’re a history buff, a sports fan, an artist, or just looking for some fun, you’ll be able to find something good. Here are some suggestions after the jump.

Cedar Street Courtyard is probably one of the reasons why Austin, Texas is known as “The Live Music Capital of the World.” Since 1995, this live music heaven has been a favorite of locals and travelers for its great atmosphere, drinks, and music. Located at 208 West 4th Street, it is one of many upscale and trendy venues in the Warehouse District. Stop by any night of the week and you’ll be guaranteed to hear some great live music and cover bands.

STS9- OSL Night Shows

Fans of electronic music should definitely check out Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) at this year’s Outside Lands music festival. This instrumental band from Santa Cruz is sure to put on a good show in a city they are very familiar with. STS9’s self-described “post-rock dance music” has risen to popularity in the electronic music scene. Their live shows have catapulted them to the forefront of electronic music and they have become familiar performers at music festivals everywhere.

STS9 was formed in Atlanta in 1999 and consists of members Hunter Brown, Jeffree Lerner, David Murphy, David Phipps, and Zach Velmer all playing a wide range of instruments. The band also founded their own record label called 1320 Records with the goal of lessening the distance between artists and fans, and their albums have been released on this label. Recently, they have released a live concert DVD called Live As Time Changes, a mixtape with STS9 and other artists, and albums Artifact and Artifact: Perspective. They were ranked #25 among Pollstar’s list of top-grossing touring acts for summer 2010 and consistently sell lots of tickets for their shows.

Alice@97.3’s Summerthing 2011

On Sunday June 26th, 15,000 people gathered in the afternoon at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park for Alice@97.3‘s annual Summerthing.  An entirely free concert along with a beautiful day in the city is sure to bring about a good crowd and the lineup of Andrew Allen, Parachute, Michelle Branch, Matt Nathanson, and OneRepublic didn’t hurt either.  There were so many people by the time I got there that I could hardly see the stage let alone the performers.  But even that didn’t ruin the music.

Due to parking troubles brought on by the massive crowds, I missed the first act, but up and coming artist Andrew Allen seemed to be a crowd pleaser and a great way to kick off the concert.  Rising to popularity in his native Canada, pop singer-songwriter Allen is now touring in the United States and has recently released a new single called “Loving You Tonight”.  I’m sure we will see more of Andrew Allen and his music.
