Workin’ for the Weekend – eventseekr’s Top Picks for 11/11/2011-11/13/2011

It’s Wednesday, which means we’re already halfway through the work week. A.K.A.: 2 days until the weekend officially begins! As usual, San Francisco is offering a bunch of fun events this weekend, and eventseekr has the scope on the best, including the top five art exhibits opening in November. If you’re not feeling too artsy, here’s the down-low details on our top five picks for other events this weekend.

Fall Luxury Chocolate Salon

The Luxury Chocolate Salon is a seasonal chocolate show taking place at the Fort Mason Conference Center in San Francisco this Sunday, November 13th. This is a must-attend event for any serious chocolate enthusiast. The Salon will feature over 30 participants, which include not only confectioners, but also local wineries and culinary artisans. Festival highlights include chef and author talks, television interviews and of course the opportunity to taste many different wines and chocolates.

Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble @ Rickshaw Stop

This German trio creates wonderfully unique sounds by combining classical instruments, jazz and electronic dance music. After wowing listeners with this beautiful fusion on their debut album, Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble has transitioned away from laptop production and expanded to a ten-piece live band. They will play at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco this Friday, November 11th. Expect to hear the compelling texture of many layered instruments that come together to create a live performance that is unique and surprisingly dance-able.

Men’s Health Urbanathlon

After a few successful years in New York and Chicago, the Men’s Health Urbanathlon is coming to San Francisco. The race course will start at 8am at Jefferson Street and head east through 7 obstacle courses, finishing at Marina Green Park. Both men and women can participate, and must register online before the race. There will be a number of exhibitions including Gatorade and Gillette samples, Paul Mitchell Haircuts, a post-race stretch led by Equinox, a beer garden, live DJ, snacks and refreshments at the finish line. Many proceeds from Urbanathlon go directly to The Challenged Athletes Foundation.

Ninth Annual San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival

3rd I, a non-profit organization that promotes South Asian filmmakers and images of South Asians in independent film, is hosting the Ninth Annual San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival this week. This year’s festival will take place November 9th – 13th, and will include over 15 film presentations by filmmakers from many South Asian countries. Audiences can enjoy seeing the directors, screenwriters, and producers of these films at a number of in-person appearances at festival screenings which will take place in San Francisco at the Roxie Cinema, Castro Theatre and Little Roxie. There will also be a special reception at the Castro Theater, including a performance by DJ Gandharv Bhatara. Tickets and 5-film passes are available.

Cirque du Soleil is a name synonymous with extraordinary performances that combine acts of impressive human strength with strange and magical music and plots. The company’s latest show is Totem, which tells the story of human evolution from an ancient amphibian state through ancient civilization and ending with man’s dream of achieving flight. As typical of Cirque du Soleil, audiences can expect to be impressed by visually appealing costumes, sets and acrobatic performances. They opened in San Francisco in late October and will run at the Grand Chapiteau at AT&T park until mid December.
