There are some amazing things going on this weekend. In addition to what we’ve already written about (Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Oktoberfest, Smuin Ballet and APE), we thought you all should know about these other awesome events:

The Castro Street Fair (11am to 6pm Sunday, October 2) has taken place between Market and Castro Streets (map) every year on the first Sunday of October ever since it was founded by Harvey Milk in 1974. The fair will include entertainment from local musicians, DJs, comedians, dance groups, and variety acts, many of whom belong to the San Francisco LBGT community. All proceeds from beverage sales and any donations made at the entry gate will go directly to supporting the Fair and its benefiting organizations.  There will also be a great selection of exhibitors, vendors, artisans and community organizations holding booths at the Fair. With over 50,000 people expected to attend, the Castro Street Fair is the perfect place to dress up, let loose with friends, and celebrate yourself.

The 12th Annual World Vegetarian Festival (10am to 6pm Saturday, October 1 to Sunday, October 2) will take over the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park over the first weekend in October. Expect to find live entertainment, healthy food demos, international vegan cuisine to sample and purchase, a children’s corner, and even vegan speed dating! The festival is free all day for kids, students, seniors, and free before 10:30am for adults. On Saturday, the festival offers a cooked or raw vegan dinner for an additional cost.

Pirates of the Barbary Coast/Captain Morgan’s Rage (9pm to 2am Saturday October 1) will be a night of debauchery on Treasure Island. There will be dance music throughout the evening presented by Captain Donovan, Hector “The Hook” Garza, and Adam “Lassy” Larios. It is requested that attendees come dressed as their favorite pirate character, and although a costume is not strictly necessary for entry, proper pirate garb guarantees free entry for ladies all night. There will be Captain Morgan Rum drink specials and pirate festivities all night.

The Underpants (Tuesday, September 17 to Sunday, October 23) is Steve Martin’s 2002 play, which opens this week at San Francisco’s Gough Street Playhouse. This show is an adaptation of the original play by Carl Sternheim. Martin’s adaptation originally ran Off Broadway at Classic Stage Company. The legendary comedian’s knack for comedy ensures that this farce will get audiences laughing. The Custom Made Theatre Co. production of the show will be featured in San Francisco until the end of October.

At Amoeba Music on Haight Street, Otis Clay will be performing a free show in-store (2pm Sunday, October 2). Clay is a legendary soul, gospel, and R&B singer who hails from Mississippi and gained popularity in the Chicago music scene where his gospel-influenced R&B singles hit the charts. He will be performing with Chick Rodgers, an established and talented songstress of soul, gospel and blues.
